📬 A Note from the  Council

Hello, Lincoln County Community!

We hope this message finds you well. As we step into October, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible achievements of September and share some exciting upcoming events with you.

In this issue, you’ll find a recap of what we accomplished last month, information on upcoming events you won’t want to miss, an educational spotlight focusing on National Recovery Month, and ways you can get involved to make our community even stronger.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement. It’s your dedication that helps us thrive!

What We Accomplished in September

1st Annual Clear Minds, Clear Skies: Sobriety Event (September 14th)
We were thrilled to host our first Sobriety Event, where over 160 community members gathered to celebrate clean living and healthy choices. This event included motivational speakers, live music, and activities for all ages, promoting substance-free lifestyles while connecting attendees to local resources for support.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Glow Walk (September 19th)
To raise awareness for Suicide Prevention Month, we organized a Glow Walk that brought together community members to honor lives lost to suicide and provide hope to those struggling. The event featured a candlelight vigil and highlighted local resources for mental health support. Over 260 participants walked in solidarity to show their commitment to this cause.

Fall Highway Cleanup
As part of our annual efforts to keep Lincoln County beautiful, volunteers gathered for our Fall Highway Cleanup, focusing on our adopted mile. This event not only promoted environmental health but also brought together community members who care about the cleanliness and safety of our local roads.

Community Support Group
Every Friday, we've held supportive gatherings for individuals looking to share their experiences, receive guidance, and connect with others about their experiences regarding the fires and flooding. Attendance is open to the public, and we encourage more people to join this safe space. Happening Fridays from 3-5 PM at ENMU-Ruidoso Room 203.

 Main Council Meeting
At our September meeting, our presenter was the New Mexico Alliance of Health Councils. They presented their many services for health councils and highlighted the advocacy work they did that enabled us to get state funding for the first time in many years. They are now advocating to make it recurrent funding.

Mobile Food Pantry
Thanks to the dedicated volunteers, our September Mobile Food Pantry served over 60 households this month. Food security is a high priority, and we continue to work toward improving access to fresh and nutritious food across Lincoln County and Mescalero.

📚 Educational Spotlight

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to emphasize prevention and early detection. Regular screenings, like mammograms, can greatly increase the chances of successful treatment. Women over 40 or at higher risk should consult their healthcare provider about screening schedules.

Know the Signs
Be aware of changes such as lumps, nipple discharge, or changes in breast shape. If you notice any of these, contact your doctor for evaluation.

Prevention Tips

  • Maintain a healthy weight

  • Stay active

  • Limit alcohol

  • Breastfeed if possible

Join us at the Pink Soccer Game on October 15th to learn more about local breast cancer resources. Early detection saves lives—schedule your mammogram today for the 12th Annual Health Fair on October 12th (see attachments for more info)!
