Prioritizing Mental Wellness
Mental Wellness Awareness emphasizes self-care. It focuses on individual actions that can be taken to improve mental wellness. Here are some effective strategies:
Take Short Walks: Walking, when and where safely enjoyed, even for just a few extra minutes, goes a long way.
Engage in Hobbies: Crafting, cooking, and listening to music are hobbies that can add bits of happiness to your day.
Prioritize Sleep: The darker days of winter can help us prioritize sleep in a good way.
Stay Hydrated: Warm drinks like hot tea help hydrate and soothe during micro-moments.
Switch Up Your Reading: Instead of reading news headlines, relax with an eBook or play physical cards with others to boost your mood.
Protect Your Energy: It’s important to shield yourself from things and people that overwhelm you.
Drink Responsibly: Drinking less and enjoying more can lead to better mental health.
Being aware of our mental wellness is the first step toward improvement.
January Awareness Month
January is a significant month for health awareness. It includes Thyroid Awareness, Cervical Health Awareness, Glaucoma Awareness, and World Leprosy Day.
Understanding Thyroid Health
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck. It produces hormones that regulate metabolism, body temperature, and heart rate. Learn more from the American Thyroid Association (American Thyroid Association).
Cervical Health Awareness focuses on cervical cancer prevention through screening. These steps can help eliminate this preventable cancer.
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Early detection is usually only possible through comprehensive eye exams. Early treatment helps stop vision loss. Find out more.
January is also National Blood Donor Month. You are encouraged to give something that is both personal and needed.
Building Awareness and Respect
If someone near you has a health issue, take the time to learn about it. Building respect comes from understanding that every condition requires awareness for better care and prevention.
The Lincoln County Community Health Council offers activities throughout the year. These activities provide alternatives, encouragement, and bring together people in our communities. We collaborate with our member partners to offer events focused on mental, physical, and general well-being, as well as food security, prioritizing the health of our communities.
