May is Mental Health Awareness Month, serving as a reminder that mental health deserves support, not stigma. Those requiring the most support are individuals and their families who are affected by mental illness. Our goal of the Lincoln County Community Health Council is to provide resources that aim to improve access to care and emphasize the importance of mental well-being.

Taking a mental break with a simple walk in the woods has proven to be a simple technique to relieve stress and increase physical activity. Mark your calendar for May 3rd and sign up here to join other peers and walk together in Mescalero. Participants will receive some cool merch too.

Sometimes, the most difficult thing to do is ask for help when you feel the most alone, or the most stressed. Sometimes, the easiest thing to do is the hardest thing to do: dialing #988 to speak to a human who wants to help. Sometimes, the hardest things to do that end up being the easiest and most rewarding experience. With counselors who understand, who can communicate, and oftentimes who’ve traveled there in worn-out shoes that have carried them through many of the same tired experiences. Their help can become more like a friend you always needed. #988 can be dialed from any cell phone.

For those who have found a new path on their Mental Health Awareness journey toward stability, sobriety, and less stressful living; May becomes a month to celebrate recovery! May 1st is National Laugh Out Loud Day, seriously! When you can laugh instead of cry or laugh so hard you end up shedding tears of joy at the release of your exhilarating humorous moment, cherish that. Those moments are meant to remind us how quickly happiness can replace sadness even in tough times.

“By prioritizing mental health, individuals can better cope with stress, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and improve their overall well-being,” says Mental Health America.
